- Global Impact | Habitat Cincinnati
a world where everyone has a decent place to live About Us Why Habitat Goals & Financials Leadership Where We Build Careers AmeriCorps Program Events News What is tithe? The tithe is one of the hallmarks of Habitat, based on our biblical roots as an ecumenical Christian ministry. Through the tithe, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Cincinnati joins other U.S. Habitat organizations in sharing 10% of our unrestricted contributions with our Habitat colleagues around the world. This practice has created a cycle of generosity and partnership for more than 40 years. Since 1987, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Cincinnati has contributed $5 Million in tithe to partners across the globe serving 1,408 international families. We've contributed $5 Million to tithe partners! our global tithe partners “It is not enough to limit your love to your own nation, to your own group. You must respond with love even to those outside of it … This concept enables people to live together not as nations, but as the human race.” Clarence Jordan, spiritual father of Habitat for Humanity Lasting Relationships At Habitat for Humanity of Greater Cincinnati, we designate our tithe to four different national partners: Habitat Cambodia, Habitat El Salvador, Habitat Kenya, and Habitat Nepal. Local leaders in these countries to direct the funds to address their specific needs. We first began a tithe partnership with Kenya in 1995, El Salvador in 2001, Cambodia in 2012, and Nepal in 2019. We build and maintain our relationships with our Tithe Partners through regular volunteer trips through the Global Village Program. Learn More A Culture of Sharing The practice of tithing among affiliates has its roots in the early days of Habitat. In 1979, Millard Fuller, the co-founder of Habitat with his wife, Linda, visited the Democratic Republic of Congo to dedicate many houses in the village of Ntondo. During the dedication ceremony, the leader of the local Habitat organization took up a collection and asked that half of the money be used to start another Habitat program. That tithe started a Habitat organization in Guatemala. And from this one small gift, Habitat’s entire tithe program grew. Today, Habitat affiliates across the U.S. participate in the tithe, and their collective tithe is over $350 million.
- Appeal | Habitat Cincinnati
The need for affordable homeownership Across Greater Cincinnati and the country, owning a home is harder than ever. Many ready-to-buy families still rent, facing high costs, few options, and years of saving, even when doing everything right. As a result, more families are putting their plans for homeownership on hold. The longer families wait, the further that goal moves out of reach. Here in Greater Cincinnati, the need is clear. For every home we build, 10 families who meet the requirements and are ready for this opportunity are still waiting. Owning a home provides something many families have gone without for too long - the stability to plan, build savings, and create a future. It means no longer worrying about rising rent or unexpected moves. It means children can grow up in a place that is truly theirs. That kind of stability is only possible because of friends like you. Give Today Did you know? 1 in 7 renters can’t afford the mortgage for a typical home today. The typical first-time homebuyer is now around 40. Over 75% of Cincinnati homes are more than 40 years old, creating major repairs and limiting move-in-ready options. Give Today Meet Rejun Rejun is a devoted mother to her two beautiful children, Zay’vin (12) and Tre’jour (8). She works as a medical health technician and continues pursuing her education to become a registered nurse. Rejun loves spending time doing activities with her children and now feels peace of mind knowing they have a safe place to play in their neighborhood. In their new home, her children can enjoy the yard and local parks in a stable, welcoming community. Your generosity is needed now. Please donate today to give more families like Rejun's the opportunity to have a safe place to call home. Give Today Meet Aaron Greg “Aaron” works in healthcare and is a single father to one daughter, Lyric. Like many in Cincinnati, Aaron experienced challenges with adequate housing. “I have lived in a one-bedroom home for the past 10 years with a landlord who really doesn't fix things up around the home.” He wanted his daughter to have the space she needed to grow and play. “It was probably one of the happiest moments of my life to know that with Habitat I am able to provide my daughter a safe, happy home to grow up in and call her own.” When you give today, you help more families like Aaron’s move from renting to owning, from uncertainty to stability, and from paying a landlord to building something of their own. building stability Banker Build The Banker Build brings community leaders from the financial industry together to construct a Habitat for Humanity home in Greater Cincinnati. Come alongside Habitat for Humanity to support a family's dream of owning their first home. April 2024 Thanks to all who joined us for the first Banker Build! Get Involved Building financial stability for generations. As a financial industry professional, you know the impacts that homeownership can have on a family for generations. When families are able to purchase a safe and stable home that they can afford, they are able to invest in other areas of their lives like education or retirement. Banker Build helps to support the financial literacy classes Habitat homebuyers attend as part of the homebuying process. Home equity is the primary wealth-building vehicle for middle-class Americans, but is often out of reach for low to moderate-income families. At Habitat for Humanity of Greater Cincinnati, we remove barriers to homeownership for first-time homebuyers to help end cycles of poverty. Learn More "One of the biggest takeaways for both of us was the financial classes. The classes helped give us a foundation for understanding our credit —understanding how to use it, and when and when not to use it. That all plays such a big part in making sure we can maintain the house after having the house. And not only just the house itself but other areas. We both actually had to get a car within six months of living here so we were able to do that and pay them off as well because we had that information and knowledge on how to do so." -Sheree, Habitat Homeowner since 2018 speaking about Habitat financial literacy classes that she attended with her adult daughter as part of the homeownership program. Bankers invested in financial wellness. Cincinnati is a thriving banking community with a strong history of community support. By teaming up with other financial industry professionals, Banker Build has the power to raise funds, walls, and awareness to increase the financial wellness of a family through affordable homeownership. With the support of their institutions and networks, teams of financial industry professionals will work alongside a Habitat homebuyer to construct a Habitat home. When the home is complete, the homebuyer will purchase the home with a 0% interest mortgage giving them a strong foundation for their future. Meet the homebuyer family. Family Stories Check back for information about the homebuyer family for the banker build. Why Habitat? Habitat builds and renovates decent, affordable houses for people who make between 30%-80% of the area's median income. All partner homebuyers must demonstrate a reliable source of income as well as invest 250 hours of sweat equity in their home and in education classes. Houses are sold at no profit with a 0% interest, 30-year loan. The homeowner's mortgage payments are reinvested to build more Habitat homes. Affordable housing solutions help local families in need provide a stable, sustainable environment to build a better future: Children of homeowners are 25% more likely to graduate from high school, 116% more likely to graduate from college, and will earn 24% higher incomes. Homeowners are 28% more likely to vote in local elections and engage in civic, school, and community groups . Homeowners are 34% more likely to have a retirement account.
